Here's a look at the Marian Central vs. Aurora Christian dual in the IHSA Class 2A state quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington.
(Note: Dual lineups can and often do change. This matchup is not guaranteed.)
What Marian does against Aurora Christian’s 138-pound state champion Noah Villarreal will be interesting. If wrestlers stay in their usual weight classes, it would be Marian’s Bryce Shelton taking on Villarreal. Shelton finished fourth at 138 in Champaign. Shelton and Villarreal did not square off last weekend. Marian could also send someone else out against Villarreal, bump up Shelton and try to maximize its medalists with fourth-place finishers Daniel Valeria at 132 and Shelton at 145 sandwiching Villarreal.
Marian Central sophomore Josh Glover: “We’ve been putting in the work for multiple years. We know we have what it takes. We’re ready to leave it on the mat and prove ourselves.”
DUAL TEAM HISTORY
Last year’s third-place finish was Marian’s first state trophy. The Hurricanes qualified in 2018 and gave eventual state champion Washington its toughest match at state in the quarterfinal. … Like Marian, Aurora Christian hadn’t qualified for dual team state prior to 2018. The Eagles won a Class 1A state title in 2018 and finished as 1A runners-up in 2019. They were bumped up to Class 2A due to the IHSA’s success factor rule for non-boundaried schools.
