Letter: Ives shows dangerous disdain for climate change risks

To the Editor:

I attended the recent Republican Forum in Naperville held by the League of Women Voters. Jeanne Ives gave a shocking response when asked about climate change. She stated that the Earth’s climate has always changed, the Paris Climate Accord was a disaster, no one should be expected to give up fossil fuels, and that CO2 was not a pollutant.

Encyclopedia Britannica defines pollution as “the addition of any substance to the environment at a rate faster than it can be dispersed, diluted, recycled or stored in some harmless form”.

The EPA stated that CO2 was a pollutant in 2009 so controls on CO2 emissions could be started. We are already experiencing early climate change effects including increasing wildfires, more violent weather, early sea level rise, and drought. It is vital to address CO2 emissions now.

Jeanne Ives dismisses any concerns about climate change. All scientific evidence shows it dangerous to our planet.

Action is needed now. Congressman Sean Casten has been a green energy entrepreneur and has sponsored bills to promote clean energy. He needs our support.Vote for our planet!Vote for Sean Casten in the March 17 primary.
