Alden-Hebron athletic director John Lalor badly wanted to keep the McHenry County All-Star Basketball Extravaganza running for a 19th consecutive year, but it will not happen.

Lalor announced this week that the games, featuring the area’s top senior boys and girls players, have been canceled because of health concerns regarding COVID-19.

The event was scheduled for April 5 at A-H’s Tigard Gymnasium, and teams were selected. Lalor thought about moving the event back a few weeks but feared that would not work either, so it was called off.

“Due to certain developments and/or restrictions we will not be rescheduling the 2020 All-Star Games,” Lalor wrote in his statement. “We feel terrible about having to make this decision, but feel it is the right and proper thing to do. Good luck to all the seniors and sorry we could not give you one more shining moment.”

Since A-H took over the game, it has been a daylong spectacle, including entertainment acts, 3-point contests for boys and girls and a boys dunk contest. Before each game, pictures were taken while David Barrett’s “One Shining Moment” played in the background. The song was made famous when CBS played it at the end of each NCAA Tournament while the winning team cut down the nets.

During the game, A-H volunteers put pictures into frames to give to the players after the game as mementos of the event.

Lalor had been working with area coaches to assemble teams and had head coaches for each of the squads.
