3 men arrested, charged with murder in connection with Crystal Lake death

The suspected murder victim whose body police found floating in the water Tuesday at Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake has been identified as 51-year-old Robert L. Krikie Jr.

Police on Wednesday announced first-degree murder charges against three men accused of beating Krikie, stealing his wallet and hitting him in the head with a rock and killing him, court records show.

All four men were listed as transient by the Crystal Lake Police Department.

Michael M. Miller, 33, has been charged with first-degree murder, robbery, aggravated battery, concealment of homicidal death and mob action.

Both David J. Peterson, 23, and William P. Linke, 50, have been charged with first-degree murder, robbery, aggravated battery, concealment of homicidal death and mob action.

Each of the men remained at the McHenry County Jail Wednesday.

Officers responded at 2:59 p.m. Tuesday to the 6100 block of Northwest Highway after receiving a 911 call. When they arrived, they found three people at the scene, one of whom appeared to be covered in blood, according to a news release police sent Tuesday evening.

Further investigation led police to a secluded wooded inlet on the west side of Three Oaks Recreation Area, where they discovered a man’s body floating in the water, according to the release.

According to criminal complaints filed in McHenry County court on Wednesday, the group of men kicked, choked and punched Krikie before picking up a rock and striking him in the head. It wasn’t immediately clear which man delivered the fatal blow. Each man is being held accountable, however, since police say the men acted as a group, according to the complaint.

Investigators believe Krikie and the accused men were acquaintances. Police described the situation as an isolated incident that presented no existing danger to public.
