A 27-year-old Marengo man was sentenced to prison after he pleaded guilty to attacking and choking a woman whom he was dating.
Patrick C. Prendergast accepted an offer from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office on Friday and pleaded guilty to a felony count of domestic battery. McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge sentenced Prendergast to four years in prison, and in exchange prosecutors agreed to dismiss additional charges, including aggravated domestic battery.
The charges against Prendergast stemmed from a Jan. 17 situation in which Marengo police responded to the report of a woman being attacked by her boyfriend, according to a news release the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office sent Wednesday.
The woman told police that Prendergast tackled her, pinned her to the ground, grabbed her around the neck until she blacked out and struck her in the face, according to the release.
Officers arrested Prendergast at the scene. Police believed the man to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the release.
