A 38-year-old man convicted of retail theft and heroin possession has been sentenced to prison after prosecutors said he violated his probation.
Brett J. Norris of Crystal Lake was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for retail theft, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Norris also received a 4½-year sentence for possession with intent to deliver heroin after admitting to violating the terms of his original sentence, according to the release. The prison sentences will run together, rather than being served independently.
Norris pleaded guilty to retail theft May 4, 2017, and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance July 19, 2018.
He was sentenced to 30 months of probation and 100 hours of public service on both charges.
He also was required to complete drug, alcohol and mental health treatments, as well as submit to random drug and alcohol tests, online records show.
According to the release, Norris did not comply with the terms of his original probation sentences on each charge.
As a result, a judge revoked his probation and resentenced Norris to prison. He remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday afternoon.
