To the Editor:
Should we cut the salaries of the County officials who will be elected this Nov. 3 by 10%?Would the majority of McHenry County taxpayers say yes to the pay cut? I believe they would likely say "yes" and "thank you."
As we all know, we are living through trying and uncertain times with unemployment on the rise, and our health and people's businesses at risk. Due to the COVID pandemic, McHenry County is projected to possibly lose up to $22 million dollars in revenue.
One good-faith gesture that has been proposed in other states, and now here in McHenry County, is a 10% reduction in compensation for elected officials.
The proposed 10% pay cut will save the county many thousands of dollars and would show that the board understands the gravity of the economic situation we find ourselves in. It will say to the taxpayer: we understand, we see what you are going through and we care.
It will be interesting to see how the board votes on Tuesday evening. I hope they vote yes to a 10% pay cut.
