74-year-old Crystal Lake man taken to hospital after accidentally shooting himself

Man suffered 'non-life-threatening injuries' after accidental discharge of firearm, sheriff's office says

A 74-year-old Crystal Lake man was loading his semi-automatic handgun on Monday afternoon when the gun accidentally discharged, hitting the man in his left leg.

About 12:40 p.m. Monday, McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an accidental gunshot victim on the 5800 block of Marietta Drive in unincorporated Crystal Lake, Deputy Sandra Rogers said.

The man was loading “a legally owned firearm” inside his residence when it discharged, causing him to suffer “non-life-threatening injuries,” Rogers said.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was dispatched to the scene at around the same time, sending a fire engine as well as an ambulance. Paramedics took the man to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital to be treated for the injuries to his leg, Fire Rescue Chief Paul DeRaedt said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office will not bring forth any charges in relation to this incident and did not report any kind of suspicious activity, Rogers said.
