Letter: Black Lives Matter to me

Protesters hold signs and chant during a Black Lives Matter protest on Friday, June 5, 2020 in downtown Crystal Lake. More than a hundred peaceful protesters stood and chanted with signs for two hours at the 5-way stop intersection of Walkup Ave, Crystal Lake Ave, and Grant St. Every 20 minutes, the group moved into the crosswalks to block traffic for 7 minutes to raise awareness for the social injustices faced by African American people across the country. Protesters marched peacefully but vocally down Grant St and East Woodstock St to Depot Park to listen to speakers share their experiences and offer ideas to help society battle racism.

To the Editor:

My wife and I attended two Crystal Lake Black Lives Matter protest marches! We realized that there are many things about racial injustice that we don't know! We don't know what it is like to be mistreated because you are black.

We don't know what it is like to be followed around a store because you are black. To be judged, criticized, condemned because you are black! Treated like a second-class citizen because you are black.

But we do know that we will be working in our community, church, and everywhere we can for racial justice and peaceful positive change for our black brothers and sisters in America! That we do know! Black Lives Matter to Mark and Jeanne Sommerfield!

How about you, my friends in Crystal Lake and McHenry County? # BLM
