To the Editor:
While we are all in this odd time of reduced interaction with our friends and neighbors, take a walk with your children to one of the Kiwanis Free Little Libraries in Crystal Lake. Since 2014 when the club began with one Little Library at the Nature Center at Veterans Park, we now have seven locations.
The six additional locations are at Main Beach (Front Gate), the YMCA, Lakewood Village Hall, the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, Hill Farm Park (at the community gardens), and Ladd Park on Coventry Lane (behind the playground).
These libraries are intended as a book exchange—take a book and leave a book. It seems that some children and adults love the books so much that the books become worn out, so we supplement throughout the year. Please use your own COVID common sense about taking books home — you might want to quarantine the book in your garage for a couple days.
Those who are immune compromised need to be especially careful. Thanks to the Crystal Lake Park District, the village of Lakewood, the YMCA, and the food pantry for hosting the library boxes and to those families who have donated books to this effort over the years.
The main source of funds for the maintenance and development of this program is the McHenry County Santa Run for Kids, held on the first Sunday in December. We urge the community to support the run each year.
