McHenry Black Lives Matter protest planned for Saturday

Protesters are expected to gather Saturday in McHenry for a Black Lives Matter demonstration.

The protest will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. at Knox Park, 333 Knox Drive, according to a flyer advertising the event.

Demonstrators will be required to wear face masks and are asked to dress in black, according to the flyer.

The protest marks continued effort by Black Lives Matter activists in the month since the Minneapolis police killing of 46-year-old Black man George Floyd. Saturday’s demonstration will be McHenry’s second Black Lives Matter protest since Floyd’s death.

McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett faced criticism earlier this month after he expressed on Facebook that “the country went from ‘back the blue’ to ‘F the police’ all due to a very small percentage of officers who are just bad people.”

Jett also announced June 18 that that he would offer police support yard signs for McHenry residents.

He said that showing support for only the McHenry Police Department and not Black Lives Matter wasn’t his intention. The mayor has since apologized and now is offering Black Lives Matter signs that will be available for pickup as soon as Thursday. The signs will require a $5 donation toward a Black Lives Matter organization.

A motorcycle and vehicle brigade also has plans to make stops throughout McHenry County on Saturday in a show of support for local law enforcement in light of the recent protests.
