2 dead after Marengo rollover crash, car fire

Two Belvidere men were killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday on Interstate 90 in Marengo, when their car overturned several times and caught fire, officials said.

The crash occurred at 10:59 p.m. when 49-year-old Harold E. Switzer Jr. and 26-year- Harold Switzer III were driving westbound near milepost 39, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police District 15 Wednesday.

For unknown reasons, the 2007 black Pontiac left the roadway before overturning multiple times and becoming engulfed by flames, according to the release. Both men were ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of the crash, which remains under investigation.

The right lane of traffic was closed about midnight and all additional lanes were closed briefly about 2 a.m. while first-responders conducted an investigation. The road was reopened at 5 a.m., according to the release.

The Illinois State Police Department had no further details to provide as of Wednesday afternoon.
