IHSA postpones board meeting, will meet with IDPH, ISBE on Friday

The IHSA announced Tuesday that it will be holding discussions with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education on Friday. As a result, the IHSA has postponed Wednesday’s board meeting until July 29.

“We expect this meeting [with IDPH and ISBE] will provide important guidance on how the IHSA will proceed with fall sports,” IHSA executive editor Craig Anderson said in a statement Tuesday.

The IHSA announced last week that it will be deferring to IDPH and ISBE regarding any return to play guidelines. That announcement came a day after a lawsuit was filed against the IHSA. The lawsuit aims to rollback the IHSA’s previously announced return to play guidelines and alleges that the IHSA doesn’t have the authority to require such guidelines.

High school athletics programs are in limbo right now, awaiting some sort of guidance regarding fall sports, some of which typically begin in mid-August.

Numerous states across the country have postponed the football season or even the entire fall sports season, while others still are forging ahead on schedule. California postponed the fall season until at least December. New York has delayed the fall season until late September. However, nearby states Indiana, Iowa and Michigan all still are on track to begin fall sports on time.
