To the Editor:
Should we cancel the ICE contract to house immigrant detainees in McHenry County?
The question would better be phrased; Should we end trafficking in human suffering for profit?
There is no other reason for detainees to be brought here to McHenry County other than to turn a profit for the county. When the county participates in this program, they do so in the name of the citizens who reside here and pay the taxes.
The responsibility of immigrant detainees is a federal responsibility and not that of McHenry County. The choice before the county is whether or not you feel it is right to profit off of trafficking in detainees, of the department of ICE, for profit or should we dedicate our resources to support the protection of the residents of McHenry County?
The argument being made to keep the ICE contract is that it helps us balance our budget in the county. Do we want to balance our county budget on the backs of the suffering of ICE immigrant detainees?

Republican County Board Members all voted against the resolution.
Carlos Acosta and Kelli Wegener voted for the resolution.
Board member Jeff Thorsen said he “...believe morality has found its home in the argument to end this contract'
The only reason to continue this contract is to continue to profit off of the suffering of the detainees. It sounds like it is a question of morality in my book.
