Letter: Get rid of elected coroner

To the Editor:

As I travel the roads of McHenry County admiring the beauty that fall provides, I have noticed as many of

you have the signs that convey the following message, “Vote NO. Keep Elected Coroner. STOP CORRUPTION!”

My question is: what corruption is this mysterious supporter talking about?

Interim McHenry County Coroner, Lt. John Miller from the County Sheriff’s Department has led the coroner’s department to become an effective department. I have seen no corruption in appointing him as an interim coroner.

It is sad to see individuals who have lowered the standards of this position. It has been reported that the elected Winnebago Coroner was arrested recently on charges of forgery, theft, conspiracy to commit theft and official misconduct.

In our own county, we had a broken department that needs accountability, oversight and openness. An appointed coroner will raise the standards and relinquish the insiders’ partisan game.

The old days of electing a coroner’s position with minimum credentials needs to be replaced with the 21st. century professional who will bring education, talents and skills that McHenry County citizens deserve.

Do not be scared by seeing signs on corruption for appointed positions.

I support appointing an individual with the essential credentials to lead our Coroner’s Department.

Michael Vijuk

Member of the McHenry County Board.
