NIU president confirms MAC meeting for Friday

NIU president Lisa Freeman on Wednesday confirmed a meeting of Mid-American Conference presidents scheduled for Friday.

"There is a MAC meeting of MAC chancellors and presidents on Friday, and that's about all I can say."

A spokesperson for athletic director Sean Frazier said the school would defer to the league for comment. The league did not return emails seeking comment.

The meeting, reported to discuss a six-game schedule for football in the fall, comes a week after the NIU team, along with the Huskies men's golf and men's basketball programs, were placed into quarantine.

At the time, a release from the athletic department said it was a proactive measure in cooperation with the DeKalb County Health Department after weekly surveillance testing indicated cases in those three programs.

When the MAC originally announced it would try to play in the spring, it was the first Football Bowl Subdivision conference to postpone the fall schedule.

Others, including the Big Ten and Pac-12, followed suit but eventually backtracked.

"We don't want to hold out hope. We don't want to abandon hope. We want this to happen," NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said. "But since COVID has graced our door, that's not the reality. Folks are doing the best they can under extreme conditions. I can't speak for other conferences, but I've talked to colleagues across the country in different conferences, and this is tough. This is an invisible enemy that doesn't want to cooperate at all. ... This might give clarity to some people, this might give hope to some people. Or it might be very scary that this might be the final decision that needs to be made."
