Letter: School and life in 2020

To the Editor:

The last couple of weeks while my wife and I have been having lunch on our screened in porch there is an eerie quiet and stillness on the South Grade School playground. When I was growing up, we lived right across the street for our grade school's playground which was right out our front door. So I sent this to my sisters:

I have been thinking about Mom the last couple of weeks since school has started here. I remember when I was back in high school or maybe college that one beautiful autumn day like today just Mom and I were going to have lunch.

The window as usual was open and you could hear the kids on the school playground laughing and playing and having fun. I asked Mom if I should close the window. She said: "No, when you can hear the kids playing on the school ground you know everything is right with the world."

I don't know if I understood what she was saying then but years later when we had kids and they were at school I did understand and especially the last 31 years here in this house where we can see and hear the kids on the school playground.

The teachers' parking lot is full of cars but there has been no kids, there has been no laughter, there has been nothing coming from the playground since school started. So things are not right with the world.
