Letter: Don't steal campaign signs

To the Editor:

Democracy is rule by the people. If we the people are to rule intelligently and effectively by selecting those who govern in our stead, we must have a fair and free exchange of ideas concerning the candidates for governmental jobs and their policy priorities.

However, some residents of McHenry County apparently do not support democracy nor the freedom of information upon which it is based. As we face the coming elections, campaign signs are one means by which information about candidates is provided to the public.

If we are to have a fair and free exchange of ideas, all political parties should be able to have legitimatec ampaign signs posted. But not in McHenry County.

Here we have those who are trying to deprive the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates from freely expressing their views by stealing Democratic campaign signs.

Democratic signs have been removed from public thorough fares and even from individuals’ private properties, while Republican signs remain.

The perpetrators of such thefts are common criminals. All of us who favor a democracy or republic, including hopefully the Republican Party, should take a stand against such anti-democratic criminal behavior.
