High school cross country: IHSA announces regional assignments, sites

Crystal Lake South’s Abby Machesky (from left), Bella Gonzalez, and Cary-Grove’s Maggie Mason compete in a cross country meet held at Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Ill., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020.

The IHSA released, on Friday, the sites and assignments for cross country regional meets which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Two of the Fox Valley Conference’s best girls teams, Crystal Lake South and Prairie Ridge, will head to different Class 2A regionals and likely meet in the sectional.

South, which is unbeaten in FVC races, will run at the Class 2A Belvidere Regional with Crystal Lake Central, Marengo, Marian Central and Woodstock as the other local teams.

Prairie Ridge will run at the Class 2A Antioch Regional. The other local teams there will be Harvard, Richmond-Burton and Woodstock North.

Hampshire and Burlington Central will run at the Class 2A Kaneland Regional.

Johnsburg is the area’s lone Class 1A school for cross country and will run at the Harvest Christian Regional.

In Class 3A, Cary-Grove and McHenry will head to the Grant Regional and Dundee-Crown, Huntley and Jacobs will be in a regional with a site to be determined.

The IHSA announced this week that a sectional competition will be added for cross country and golf. The sectional meet sites are yet to be determined. The dates of the sectionals will be on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, all regional and sectional races will be run in flights, so all teams are not on the course at the same time.
