Letter: Fix our spending, don't add to taxes

To the Editor:

One of my biggest problems with the proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitution is that this is being marketed to our state’s citizens as being a “fair” tax.

Under our state’s current income tax system, if someone makes $10,000 of taxable income, they pay the state $495. If someone makes $250,000, they pay $12,375. I need to have someone explain to me why this is not “fair.”

I think one of the underlying reasons for the Democrats’ proposed amendment is their party’s obsession with the issue of “income inequality.” They must believe it is unfair that someone (through their own talents and hard work) can make $1 million. But if they do, then the state must be entitled to an even larger portion of that income. By increasing the tax, the person’s remaining after-tax income would be lower and therefore would be more “fair.”

The real reason for the proposed amendment is the Democrats’ reluctance to solve the state’s spending problem and fix the deep hole they have dug regarding unfunded public pensions. Why won’t the Democrats allow amendments to the Illinois Constitution to fix those problems?

The spending and unfunded pensions are very real problems, and they are the primary reason why Illinois has lost population and every other state bordering Illinois has seen their populations increase.

Many small business owners have simply closed up shop in Illinois and moved to another state, taking those jobs with them. Our state is caught in a downward spiral of an ever-shrinking population that is left paying the tab for an ever-increasing amount of government debt.

I think we should fix the spending problems before we give any more power and tax dollars to the politicians in Springfield.
