Police seek suspects in string of car burglaries in McHenry, DeKalb counties

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects who were captured on video burglarizing cars in both McHenry and DeKalb counties.

“We are experiencing a high volume of thefts from unlocked vehicles, and these are suspects from recent vehicle burglaries,” the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a post on its Facebook page.

The sheriff’s office also shared two security camera videos of the suspects looking into car windows, moving around inside vehicles and running away.

“We are actively investigating and hope someone will ID the suspects in the video,” McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Creighton said. “We would like to remind people to lock the car doors and secure their valuables inside at night.”

One of the most recent burglaries occurred in DeKalb County, Creighton said. The McHenry and DeKalb county sheriff’s offices are working together to identify the suspects.

In DeKalb County, the sheriff’s office is seeking information about burglaries to vehicles and two stolen vehicles.

The thefts occurred in Kirkland, Kingston and Genoa, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Detective Jackie Lane said.

About 11:30 p.m. Monday, suspects entered an unlocked vehicle in a driveway and used the garage door remote to enter the garage. Inside, they stole miscellaneous items and two vehicles, Lane said.

Those vehicles later were found in rural Kirkland and Kingston, and a security camera caught one of the suspects on video.

Police think there are four suspects, all of whom likely are in their late teens to early 20s, Lane said. The suspects’ vehicle is described as a dark-colored Volkswagen Jetta with possible Blackhawks license plates or a temporary plate.

“We’d like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles, don’t keep your car keys or valuables inside of your vehicle, and bring your garage door opener inside with you,” the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said in the post.

Anyone with information about this investigation can contact the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at 815-338-2144 or Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272 or crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org.
