To the Editor:
I have received a mailer singing the praises of Brian Sager as a tax fighter and champion of the people. It contrasts his support for a cut in the Woodstock property tax levy and Rep. Steve Reick’s support in raising the Illinois gas tax.
What this mailer fails to point out is Sager’s indifference to the state gas tax when it was pushed through and his own record of tax increases. There was the special census he promoted which enabled the city to become home rule and raise the sales tax.
He was all in for the shopping bag fee … another tax, and raising the city’s gas tax for a road repair program. The city’s gas tax fell short and he and the council have discussed what additional taxes they might impose.
Brian Sager is certainly not a tax fighter and if seated you should not expect anything but a faithful Democrat party line vote.
As for being a champion of the people, almost all of his tenure in city government has been the promotion of the Woodstock Square at the expense of the rest of the community. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on improvements and promotion of the square but throughout the city shuttered businesses and closed factories are unaddressed.
The residents of the 63rd District should carefully consider their vote given Sager’s support of ever increasing taxes and his singular focus on the Woodstock Square.
