A Highland Park woman faces child endangerment charges after police say she drunkenly crashed her car into another vehicle while her children were on board.
Police from multiple agencies responded at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Route 47 and Foster Road near Huntley for a two-vehicle crash, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.
A 2014 Ford Escape driven by Melissa E. Sanchez was traveling southbound on Route 47 and crashed into the rear of a Toyota Tacoma. The Toyota, driven by a 23-year-old Union man, was stopped in traffic attempting to turn east onto Foster Road at the time of the crash, according to the release. Sanchez, 37, had two children in her vehicle at the time.
Sanchez was taken to Northwestern Huntley Hospital for minor injuries. Her children, who were in child restraints, were evaluated by medics and turned over to a family member, according to the release.
The driver of the Toyota was similarly evaluated and refused further medical treatment.
Police charged Sanchez with driving under the influence of alcohol and child endangerment. She also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, illegal transportation of alcohol, and failure to notify officials about a change of address.
The most serious charges, child endangerment and DUI, are misdemeanors that typically result in less than one year in jail. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was additionally notified of the situation, according to the release.
Sanchez is scheduled to make a court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10.
