Fall is just around the corner, which means it’s almost time to turn on your home’s furnace.
But before you crank up the heat, it’s a good idea to call in a professional for a maintenance check-up because there’s nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night to a freezing house in the middle of a snowstorm.
For fall, a precision tune-up of your furnace or boiler is the recommended service, according to Beth Wagner, marketing coordinator at Black Diamond Plumbing & Mechanical Inc., McHenry.
“Everybody needs to have that done every year,” Wagner noted. “Annual maintenance is important for spotting potential health and safety issues.”
In addition to cleaning your furnace your HVAC professional will look for any problems with gas or carbon monoxide leaks.
HVAC maintenance by a professional also helps keep your warranty on your unit valid.
“Most manufacturers require maintenance to keep the equipment under warranty,” Wagner added.
Cleaning your HVAC system will also help the boiler run at the efficiency it was intended to run.
“If you buy a higher efficiency furnace and you don’t maintain it, the efficiency will drop,” Wagner explained. “It will cost you more money on gas and electric bills that you wouldn’t have to pay if you kept it maintained.”
Additionally, furnaces and boilers that have proper maintenance performed are much less likely to need emergency repair.
“It’s much cheaper in the long run to have annual maintenance done than to have emergency repairs performed. Those failures are never convenient for the homeowner,” Wagner said.
Homeowners should also remember to change their furnace filter every month, without fail, Wagner cautioned.
“When you don’t change the filter you're setting yourself up for needing emergency service due to damage to the furnace through a clogged filter.”
