Diet and exercise can help you lose weight and body fat, but may not leave you with the overall contour and shape you’re looking for. It’s been proven that trying to spot-reduce is ineffective. Liposuction, a procedure used by cosmetic surgeons to remove fat deposits and help shape the body, may be the answer to concerns you have about sagging skin and localized fat deposits.
During liposuction, fat is removed from underneath skin with the use of a vacuum-suction canula (a hollow instrument resembling a pen) or using an ultrasonic probe that breaks the fat into small pieces and then removes it with suction. It can be performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, calves, arms, back, and neck.
Dr. Robert Paresi, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with Mercy Health System, performs many liposuction procedures every year. Techniques have improved significantly since their initial development, giving Dr. Paresi the ability to actually sculpt areas of your body to give you the contour and shape you desire. With proper diet and exercise, results are permanent. His techniques limit side effects and swelling, and you can return to normal activities in approximately two weeks.
“The most popular areas that I treat with liposuction are the abdomen and sides, or flanks,” said Dr. Paresi. “I also help my patients achieve better contour along their jawline and neck by removing fat from the jowls and neck area. And a lot of my male patients prefer to have their chests contoured and reduced in size.”
Dr. Paresi uses local anesthesia in about 80% of his patients. “An injected solution numbs the area, and an oral sedative helps with minor pain,” said Dr. Paresi. “The patient is awake during the procedure, so most surgeries are very low risk.” For more information about liposuction and the areas of the body that benefit the most from the procedure, please contact:
