Replacing the siding on your home is sometimes necessary to reinforce the safety of the home, to keep it looking nice, and to help maintain its value. It's very important to choose a high quality siding contractor for the selection and installation of new siding.
Hiring a bad siding contractor can result in shoddy workmanship, a failed exterior envelope that can allow weather and moisture to enter the home, and the voiding of the original siding manufacturer's material warranty. If there's a problem, you risk having the contractor refuse to offer to help, if he can even be located.
"To identify a good siding contractor, homeowners should find referrals," said Rhett Wilborn, owner of Innovative Home Concepts, Inc. "If you know someone who has had exterior improvements to their home, ask about their experience. If they rave about it, that company is a good candidate." If you don't have a referral, research extensively on the internet, and check out company websites. "Look for updated, helpful information, including background about the company, the staff, and the products they offer. Consider associations they belong to and awards they've won. Review sites aren't always helpful, but social media posts can provide insight into a company and its staff," he said.
After choosing a company, request a cost estimate for the project. "Look for professionalism and knowledge," added Wilborn. "Watch out for high pressure and pricing games, like huge price drops for signing a contract that day. Get a written, detailed proposal for the work to be performed. Once you make a final decision, obtain a detailed contract outlining the work to be done, with which materials, and in what time frame. A third to a half of the total cost is a customary deposit request for in-stock items; half the cost is requested if materials are special order and non-returnable."
