With Earth Day just a few short weeks away, now is the time to start thinking of meaningful ways you can make a difference. First observed in 1970, April 22 annually marks the anniversary of the environmental movement’s birth.
Wondering what you can do that day (and every day) to help conserve natural resources and maintain environmental sustainability? Elgin Recycling offers these tips:
1. Get to stepping
Consider leaving your car in the garage on Earth Day and choose to either walk or ride your bike instead. Not only is it great exercise, but you help to reduce air pollution.
2. Recycle right
Recycling is important. So is recycling the right way. Make sure the items you put in the recycling bin belong there. For instance, while plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard can be recycled, soiled pizza boxes and plastic bags should not be put in the recycling bin.
3. Develop a green thumb
Consider giving back to the environment by planting trees. Not only can they beautify an area, but trees also help clean the air. Putting in a garden can also be a great way to celebrate Earth Day. Growing your own food helps reduce the amount of fuel you need to get to the store and back.
4. Waste not
Planning to pack a lunch for school or work? Opt for reusable container options over plastic sandwich bags. If you’ll be heading to the store on Earth Day, use reusable totes to transport your groceries home. While at the store, buy products with less packaging. By making slight alterations to your shopping list, you can significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
