Three ways to wax your car

SPONSORED

Waxing your car not only keeps it looking great, it helps preserve the integrity of your paint job.

Automotive experts recommend waxing your vehicle every three months. You could pay to have it waxed at the car wash, but you can also do the job yourself, at a fraction of the cost.

There are several ways to wax a car, but all of them require a thorough cleaning beforehand to remove dust and dirt. Do NOT use household cleaners like hand soap, dishwashing detergent, or glass cleaner, advises Consumer Reports. They can damage your car’s finish. Instead, use a dedicated car-wash product, which is milder and specifically designed for use on automotive paint.

It’s a good idea to check your owner’s manual to see if there are any special instructions for waxing your particular vehicle.

The three ways to wax your car are based on the three different kinds of waxes: liquid, soft and hard wax.

Liquid wax is simple to apply and can be used every time you clean your car. Use a clean cloth or wax applicator, which makes the job easier.

Soft wax is more solid than liquid but still not as hard as hard wax. It’s easy to apply. As it dries a haze will appear. Wipe it off with a soft cloth after it dries thoroughly.

Hard wax should be used a couple of times a year. It lasts longer than other waxes and should be applied in small areas.

If you use an orbital buffer to apply wax, Popular Mechanics recommends using a clean buffer pad, spreading evenly, applying intermittent, not continuous, pressure. Cover a fourth of the panel at a time before removing the wax, following directions for drying time. Use a microfiber cloth to remove the wax, using circular motions to achieve a high gloss, adds Popular Mechanics. Repeat until your car is shining.
