Home lighting trends set the mood and increase value

If you’re planning on building a new house, take your lighting options into consideration.

“One of the things that really can impact a house is lighting, which has progressed from a button on the wall to an app on your phone,” says George Caraelli, owner of Worthington Homes, in Lakewood, Illinois.” It’s a wise investment that will add to the enjoyment of your home long-term.”

Your best option to add lighting, or at least the wiring, is while the house is under construction, says Caravelli. “I’d rather put more wire behind the walls and not use it right away,” he says.”That gives you the opportunity to expand your lighting options later.”

Down the road, if you choose to add audio visual technology like speakers for surround sound in a room or to spread music throughout the house, the task is much easier and less expensive than rewiring. “You can do it wirelessly, but you’ll get better quality and a more dependable system with hardwiring,” says Caravelli. “It may cost a little more, but it’s your one chance to set the mood.” One switch can control can lighting in the ceiling, under-cabinet lights, lighting for watching TV, romantic lighting, or task lights.

Wiring for lighting may cost a little more up front, but it can increase your home’s resale value, It’s money well spent and it makes a strong impact on the overall feel of your house,” says Caravelli.

“We also put a ceiling fixture in all our rooms in our Cambria development, in Lakewood, that’s also fan-ready if you want to upgrade later,” Caravelli says. “The wiring and support are there and ready to go. All you have to do is hang the fan, and most are remote-operated for speed and dimming.”
