Nothin' Up My Sleeve is a family-friendly magic show that has become a staple in the McHenry County arts community. Attending this annual event, now in its 17th year, is a tradition for local families; many who attended as children now bring their own kids to this terrific show.
"On Saturday, November 2, this wonderful evening will feature mystifying magic, illusion, comedy, juggling, and plenty of audience participation," explained Glenn Chelius, Producer and Emcee of Nothin' Up My Sleeve. "The theme will be traditional Vaudeville/Variety. We'll present our pre-show close-up magic in the lobby beginning at 6:00 p.m., and following the 7:00 p.m. show we'll have beautifully illustrated collectible posters available for purchase. All sales benefit Raue Center, and the entire cast will autograph the posters."
Chelius has always had a love for all arts, especially magic and ventriloquism. "I received a magic set for Christmas at age 6, that's when I got the bug," he said. "I performed for my family and friends, and my life became all things magic - I'd read magic books, hang out at the magic shop, buy new tricks, and watch magic specials on TV. I developed a magic show of my own and performed for hire, eventually adding doves to my act to set myself apart from other kid magicians." When asked what he liked best about performing magic, Chelius said, "The real magic is connecting with people, and magic gives us a great way to do that."
Chelius creates each show with his co-producer and good friend Nino Cruz. "Nino is an accomplished magician, hypnotist, escape artist, motivational speaker, and host," he added. "We share the same passion for inspiring and helping young up-and-coming magicians by giving them an opportunity to perform for large audiences." Tickets start at $17, and are $6 for students.
