Three things to know before flying during the holidays

SPONSORED

Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. And while staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others, here are three tips for getting by when holiday travel is unavoidable:

1. Mask up

Passengers should make sure to bring a face mask or covering to keep their noses and mouths covered while at the airport and in-flight. The masks can be taken off while eating or drinking but should be immediately put back on when passengers are done. Additionally, try to select the window seat to stay farther from fellow passengers who may walk through the aisles. At the airport, make sure to avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet apart from anyone who is not from your household and wash your hands often. The CDC also recommends considering how you get to and from the airport, as public transportation and ridesharing can increase your chances of being exposed to the virus.

2. Wipe down

For the plane, bring your own hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes to clean off hands, seats, seatbelts, tray tables, armrests and other areas. The TSA is allowing one liquid hand sanitizer container up to 12 ounces per passenger instead of the usual 3.4-ounce limit in carry-on bags. If you use the restroom in-flight, bring wipes to clean off the door handle and lavatory surfaces. The CDC recommends using an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

3. Switch open

According to the CDC, most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes. Keeping overhead vents fully open during flights can help to further maximize air circulation.
