Flying during the summer? 3 things to know

Flying in a pandemic can be risky as it can increase your chances of getting infected with or spreading COVID-19. And while staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick, for some it may be unavoidable. Here are three things to know when it comes to navigating summer flights:

1. Travel restrictions

Check to see if your destination requires that visitors quarantine themselves for 14 days upon arrival. For up-to-date information and travel guidance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends checking the state or local health department where you are, along your route, and at your planned destination.

2. Practice good hygiene

The CDC recommends that travelers wash their hands regularly, including directly before and after completing the security screening process. Additionally, avoid close contact with others at the airport by keeping six feet of physical distance from others, and wear a cloth face covering over the nose and mouth while traveling. The TSA is allowing one liquid hand sanitizer container, up to 12 ounces per passenger, in carry-on bags until further notice. Travelers are also permitted to bring individually-packaged alcohol or anti-bacterial wipes in carry-on or checked luggage.

3. Don’t panic if your license is expired

If your driver’s license or state-issued ID expired on or after March 1, 2020, and you are unable to renew at your state driver’s license agency, you may still use it as acceptable identification at the checkpoint. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will accept expired driver’s licenses or state-issued ID a year after expiration.   DHS recently announced an extension of time to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license. The new deadline is Oct. 1, 2021.
