3 tips for off season AC deals

If you were able to eke out another hot summer with your failing air-conditioning unit, but don’t want to risk a breakdown next year in peak humidity, now’s the time to explore off season discounts.

Fall is the optimum time purchase a new system, as prices are typically lower when technicians are between busy seasons for service calls, according to Tom Eppers, co-owner, Dowe & Wagner, a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) company serving residential and commercial customers in Illinois and Wisconsin.   Once winter arrives, HVAC companies become swamped with furnace repairs and maintenance calls.

Here are three tips for getting the best AC deal now:

1. Do your research to choose a reputable contractor, who can help you choose and install the right size unit for your home.   Check online company reviews, and seek referrals from family and friends.   Make sure the contractor is certified to install HVAC equipment.   Compare companies and services offered.

2. Research AC systems to determine which features are most important to you.   Want to program the temperature through your smart phone?   Need to improve the cooling in certain areas of your home, such as upstairs?   Need to enhance the overall air quality?   Many new units are also high efficiency, which can reduce your overall cooling energy costs.

3. When negotiating the final price, have all your facts available, and compare similar offers.   Take time to review the contract.   Make sure the final price includes all equipment and installation costs.   If you’re completely replacing your unit, make sure provisions are clearly stated for removing and recycling the original equipment. Review the warranty, and make sure you understand the provisions, and maintenance requirements.
