Because it’s not too hot or not too cold outside, April is considered part of the off season for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry. To spur business during this slower time, some companies are offering discounts before the busy hot summer month arrive.
Tom Eppers, co-owner, Dowe & Wagner, an HVAC company serving residential and commercial customers in Illinois and Wisconsin, says his company is offering five percent off furnace and air-conditioning installations, with more savings and rebates when the units are purchased together. Manufacturers’ discounts may apply, too.
What is the average price of a new HVAC system? Eppers agrees with Angie’s List, which averages costs nationwide. Many factors influence price, including the brand manufacturer, unit size, and efficiency rating. In general, installation for a new furnace and central air conditioner costs between $6,000 to $12,000 dollars.
Eppers explains that air conditioners now cost about the same as furnaces. “Years ago, it was less costly to install an air conditioner. However, new environmental laws (to closely contain and monitor refrigerants) have driven the cost up to match that of a furnace. But there are many options available for customers looking for an economy, mid-grade, or high-end system.”
Customers needing just an air conditioner may discover that the new equipment isn’t compatible with an older furnace, which shares common components.
Eppers adds that HVAC units last about 15 years, based on maintenance and usage. Newer units benefit from increased energy efficiency ratings that offer long-term savings.
Since an HVAC system is a significant household expense that also impacts a home’s safety and comfort, Angie’s List recommends thoroughly investigating a contractor before hiring. Checking references and verifying that the company is properly licensed, certified, and experienced are recommended.
