Alumni Associations Foster Connection Well After Classes Come to an End

Although it may not always be the first benefit associated with pursuing higher education, social engagement and networking opportunities are important aspects of a student’s college experience. Meeting like-minded individuals through various clubs, sports, and activities can enrich students’ lives and encourage them to connect with the greater community. This can be especially true at a community college, which also serves as a gathering place for local residents to come together for common events, classes, and meetings.

But once students have graduated or left the school atmosphere, it can sometimes be difficult to find opportunities to engage with others.

As a common resource for the larger community, McHenry County College (MCC)’s Alumni Association can be a great start for those looking to stay informed and connected to the college, network, and meet friends with similar interests and experiences.

“Many people don’t realize that taking even one credit class at MCC qualifies you as an alumni,” said Katie Gaskill, coordinator of events and outreach for the Friends of MCC Foundation. “As such, our alumni can be found throughout the community and across the country making an impact as business owners, IT professionals, chefs, teachers—the list goes on and on.”

The Association meets several times a year for various networking events and workshops and offers many resources the community can take advantage of year-round—including career services, professional development opportunities, and more.

“Alumni can reach out to us for anything from help brushing up on certain skills to tips for starting their own business,” said Gaskill. “Or they can check out any of our events to meet with fellow alumni, reminisce on memories made at MCC, or volunteer in a variety of ways to give back to current students.”

Those interested in joining the MCC Alumni Association can visit www.mchenry.edu/alumni or email alumni@mchenry.edu or call (815) 479-7529. Alumni are also encouraged to join the MCC Alumni group on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3e5sJ12.
