When Illinois’ shelter-in-place order was enacted in response to COVID-19, it slowed some aspects of service at Senior Care Volunteer Network. Other areas, however, ramped up like never before.
With the not-for-profit’s technological infrastructure already in place, SCVN was able to easily transition to working remotely at full staff capacity. To that end, while the physical office was closed, SCVN was able to continue providing transportation, delivering meals, and making wellness calls.
“Specifically, volunteers provided 817 transports during the Stay-At-Home order to life-critical appointments such as chemotherapy, dialysis, and surgeries, as well as partnered with the Crystal Lake Food Pantry to deliver the equivalent of 1,820 meals to McHenry County seniors who were experiencing food insecurity,” Outreach Director Laura Turasky said. “Additionally, volunteers were able to complete 808 friendly phone calls.”
SCVN's mission is to help seniors maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life by remaining in their own homes or the home of a loved one for as long as possible. It is the volunteers who make achieving that mission possible.
McHenry County has the fourth fastest-growing senior population in the state. As more and more community members reach retirement age, the need for volunteers becomes even more dire, as do the no-cost services they help deliver.
As of July 1, 2020, all SCVN services are available with modification. DME returns are by appointment only and July’s return/donate days are July 13 th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and July 25 th from 9 a.m. to noon. Dates for August return/donate are Monday, August 10th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to noon.
