COVID and Parenting

Having COVID disputes with your ex?   Here are some thoughts.

Don’t make it political.   When there are decisions to be made about the children, focus on the CDC guidelines, the school guidelines, your doctor’s recommendation, and the orders from the governor.   This applies even if you do not believe in them.   Most judges will decide these issues while putting their personal political beliefs aside as well and will follow these standards.

Set a good example. Remain socially distant.   Wear a mask. If you expect your children to follow your rules, please set an example for following rules.

If you or your children have symptoms of COVID, call the doctor.   Telehealth appointments are easy.

Cooperate and share the obligation for remote learning. Your children’s education cannot all fairly or effectively rest with one person.

Discuss travel plans in advance and try to reach an agreement.   For some, the idea of their children taking a trip to Florida is terrifying.   For others, it is a great time to see Mickey.

Start to plan the holidays now.   Consider the health of your more senior relatives and the kids’ exposure to groups of people.   Include the children in holiday plans.

Keep in mind that this is a challenging time for children who have even less of a voice or a choice than the adults do.   Encourage them to express their concerns and to remember the positives of game nights, bike rides and other family activities that may have been more frequent in 2020.
